Joints in concrete constuction

1. Isolation joints

Isolation joints are designated to separate the movement of a concrete element (wall, slab, foundation, footing etc) from similar adjacent elements. Isolosation joint can be:

  1. Thermal expansion joint
  2. Seismic Isolation joints

2. Contraction joints

a groove formed, sawed, or tooled in concrete pavement to create a weakened plane and regulate or control the location of cracking in a concrete cracking due to volume change effects, especially shrinkage; sometimes referred to as control joint

3. Construction joints

the surface where two successive placements of concrete meet, across which it is desirable to develop and maintain bond between the two concrete placements, and through which any reinforcement that may be present is not interrupted.
